Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed that parts of the Mahorasop Sompoch performances -- organised to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty the King -- be staged during the 34th Asean Summit, which will take place in Bangkok on June 22-23.
According to assistant government spokesman Athisit Chainuwat, Gen Prayut has ordered state agencies to select several performances from the Mahorasop Sompoch festival to be showcased at the summit to promote Thai culture.
Maj Gen Athisit said the pieces must be "appropriate for a high-level meeting of regional leaders" and "not too long".
In preparation for the summit, the Culture Ministry introduced a song to be played at the opening of the summit at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Mahorasop Sompoch performances were organised as part of the week-long celebration between May 22-28 to celebrate His Majesty the King's coronation.
Among the pieces performed were a dance called Asirawat Thuayratnomjomrachan, or "People's Salute to the Monarch", a khon masked dance called Prabaramee Mingfa Rama-awatan, or "the Kingly Benevolence of Rama", a concerto titled Thasama Rachan Kwanla (King Rama X, the Pillar of the People), and an operetta titled Pasanjaipak Jongraknarubordee, which means "United Hearts in Reverence of the King".
Some of the performances have origins that can be traced back centuries to the Ayutthaya era.
The shows at Sanam Luang in Bangkok and other provinces drew thousands of artists and performers as well as audiences from throughout the kingdom.
