Royal fans marvel at 1957 footage of Queen giving first televised Christmas speech

Fans of the Queen marvelled at how young she looked as the Royal Family's Instagram account shared a video of her first televised Christmas speech more than 60 years ago.

Queen Elizabeth, aged 31, can be seen in the black and white 1957 video addressing members of the public in an evening gown and the three-string pearl necklace given by her father King George VI when she turned 21.

Paying tribute to her grandfather King George V, who began broadcasting Christmas messages on the radio in 1932, she said: "25 years ago, my grandfather broadcast the first of these messages.

"Today is another landmark, because television has made it possible for many of you to see me in your homes on Christmas Day."

Queen Elizabeth recorded her first Christmas message on the radio in Sandringham, Norfolk in 1952. She was 26 at the time, and it had just been months after her father's death.

Five years later, she gave her first televised festive speech from Buckingham Palace.

One Instagram user marvelled at the sight of the 31-year-old Queen. They commented: "She was so young. She sounds like a baby."

Another said: "And what a true privilege it must have been to be able to see and hear Her Majesty for the first time. Long live the Queen."

And another comment read: "What an amazing delivery! Calm and relaxed, yet regal. She is amazing and always has been."

In the full speech, which can be viewed on YouTube, the Queen continues: "I very much hope that this new medium will make my Christmas message more personal and direct.

"It's inevitable that I should seem a rather remote figure to many of you, a successor to the kings and queens of history, someone whose face may be familiar in newspapers and films, but who never really touches your personal lives.

"But now at least for a few minutes, I welcome you to the peace of my own home.

"That it's possible for some of you to see me today is just another example of the speed at which things are changing all around us."
