Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo issues statement to fans after show cancellation

THE Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has issued a statement to fans after Storm Floris forced organisers to cancel a show for first time in 75 years.

Organisers are expected to "let the pipes sing once the weather settles" after they made the decsion to cancel Monday's performance, making it the first time a how had been cancelled due to a weather-related event in the production's 75-year history.

An emergency planning meeting had been called on Sunday afternoon to discuss the latest developments as the storm made its way across the Atlantic towards Scotland.

The team had told the public to keep an eye out for updates as “the safety and well-being of our audience members, performers, and staff remain our top priority," before announcing the cancellation late that night.

As winds continued to increase on Monday afternoon, organisers sent out a post on social media, writing: "We’re standing by and can’t wait to get the show going again tomorrow, subject to safety checks, and let the pipes sing once the weather settles.

"Massive thanks for all your kind words over the past 24 hours. We feel the love."

All tickets for the August 4 performance were automatically cancelled and refunded, the team said.

A gust of 82mph at Wick airport on Monday provisionally equalled the highest August gust in Scotland with speeds in excess of 70mph records in various parts of the country.

The aftermath of the storm is continuing to bring disruption with more wet and windy weather on the cards for Scotland later in the week.

ScotRail said suspended routes would need to be checked before they could be reopened with disruption expected until around 4pm on Tuesday.

The following rail routes remain closed:

  • Perth – Inverness (Highland Main Line)
  • Inverness – Aberdeen
  • Inverness – Kyle of Lochalsh
  • Inverness – Wick/Thurso
