Royal British Legion urge people to take a two minute silence on Remberance Day

The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to mark Remembrance Day safely from their doorsteps by taking part in a national two-minute silence.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and current restrictions, the annual ceremonies hosted by North Lanarkshire Council have been curtailed.

The council has organised wreath laying ceremonies at local war memorials, but the public are being encouraged to mark Remembrance Sunday at home.

Small ceremonies will take place at Coatbridge and Motherwell for a limited number of invited dignitaries only.

The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to watch events on television or take part in a two-minute silence from their doorsteps at 11am on Sunday, November 8.

Provost Jean Jones said: “Under normal circumstances we take great pride in marking Remembrance Sunday here in North Lanarkshire, but this year it is vital we help protect lives and stick to the restrictions which have been put in place to try and control Covid-19.”

Archie Aitken, Head of Legal and Democratic Solutions with North Lanarkshire Council said: “Following updated Scottish Government guidance regarding Remembrance Sunday commemorations, all formal events have been cancelled in line with Level 3 restrictions. This includes our official wreath laying ceremonies at Coatbridge and Motherwell.

“We are encouraging people to mark Remembrance Day safely from their doorsteps by taking part in a national two-minute silence at 11am on Sunday 8 November.

“While we are disappointed we aren’t able to mark Remembrance Sunday as we normally would, it is vital we all observe the restrictions which have been put in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus and help protect lives.”
