Royal Bolton Hospital spent £12m on Covid-19 in six months, report reveals

Bolton’s hospital trust spent more than £12m on Covid-related matters in just six months, a health report has revealed.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust’s latest finance and investment committee report was presented to board members last week.

It stated that in month six of the financial year, from April 1, the trust spent £2.3M on Covid-related items.

The year to date total expenditure amounted to £12.2m.

With regard to capital investment, the trust has a capital programme of £7.6m and in addition has received funding for Covid schemes of £6.1m.

The Covid schemes relate to £2.6m spent on same-day emergency care in the accident and emergency department.

Critical care has received £2.1m of Covid investment while endoscopy at the hospital had £200,000 spent on it.

The report stated that £1.2m was spent on equipment related to coronavirus.

Agency expenditure also increased during August and September, it noted.

This was mainly due to additional expenditure as a consequence of staff taking accrued leave.

The report added that the trust has so far delivered financial year savings of £2.8m against an original target of £6.8m which represents 0.8 per cent of turnover.

However, it was noted that the programme has been significantly impacted by coronavirus.
