Merseyside plane crash: One dead after microlight aircraft bursts into flames as it crashes at golf course

A person has died after a light aircraft crashed at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport.

The microlight aircraft burst into flames after crashing at the popular golf course on Thursday evening.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue crews were working to extinguish the blaze. Emergency services were called at about 7pm.

Surrounding roads were closed and motorists were urged to avoid the area.

Police confirmed a person died following the crash but gave no further details.

In statement, Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm we are tonight, Thursday, April 11, dealing with an incident in Birkdale.

“At around 7pm this evening emergency services were called to the Royal Birkdale Golf Course following reports a microlight aircraft had crashed.

“Merseyside Fire and Rescue are at the scene distinguishing the fire caused when the aircraft hit the ground.

“Ambulance crew are also in attendance.

“Road closures are in place on the Coastal Road including Shore Road and Weld Road and we advise motorists to avoid the area.”

The force later added: "A person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are still establishing the facts and the identity of the person and enquiries are ongoing."
