Royal baby shawl firm GH Hurt and Son has all hands on deck to deal with surge in orders

Less than a week has passed since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex introduced little Archie Harrison to the world, wrapped in a shawl made by Chilwell firm GH Hurt and Son.

Now, the newest Royal already appears to be a fashion trailblazer after the knitwear company reported a surge in orders for the merino wool product he was swaddled in for his first public appearance.

The ivory Leaves and Flowers shawl, which retails at £105, takes two days to create and there has also been a number of orders for the cashmere hat and mittens Archie was dressed in, also made by GH Hurt and Son .

Gillian Taylor, director of the family-owned firm , said: "We are very busy producing these (Leaves and Flowers shawl) at the moment and they are going very well. We are also selling quite a lot of the hats and mittens.

"We have seen a surge but we have also seen a surge across the whole of the website on a mix of products because there is a price range for everybody.

"We have been very busy this week. Obviously there is a lot of interest all at once and you get quite a few orders in all at the same time.

"We are a small business so we are trying our best to make sure we get them all out to customers as quickly as possible. We have some super customers and some wonderful well wishes and a lot of people seem prepared to wait a little bit longer - but they won't have to wait too long."

GH Hurt and Son has been a favourite of The Royal Family for decades, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also choosing to wrap their newborns in Nottingham lace.

The firm never knows, however, if a Royal couple will use their products until they see the first images.

Mrs Taylor added: "From when Meghan became pregnant people were asking us about it, but we never know beforehand.

"With the recent history of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge using our shawls we obviously prepare as best we can just in case. Harry and Meghan had been doing things in a different way and taking their own decisions so we were delighted they kept to the tradition and used one of our shawls."

Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne, was introduced to the world on Wednesday (May 8) at St George's Hall in Windsor Castle. He was born on the Monday morning, weighing 7lb 3oz.

Harry and Meghan described the baby as having the "sweetest temperament".
