Royal baby news: Prince Harry spotted at London Marathon as he and Meghan prepare for arrival of first child

Prince Harry made a surprise visit to the London Marathon today as he and Meghan prepare for the arrival of their first child.

The Duke of Sussex watched the runners, met volunteers and presented medals to the marathon and wheelchair winners, including the elite men and women's race winners Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei.

It is understood Harry had always planned to go but with the birth of his child due around this period it was not announced in advance.

The duke's presence suggests wife Meghan, who is at their Frogmore Cottage home on the Windsor Castle estate, is not expected to give birth imminently.

Since the couple, who married in May last year, announced the pregnancy last October, they have remained tight lipped about the details surrounding the birth.

However, they have given a few hints on the due date, with many expecting the seventh in line to the throne to arrive by early May.

Meghan went on maternity leave from official royal duties earlier this month.

Harry and Meghan have ruled they will keep the birth private amid reports it will be midwife-led at the couple’s home at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “They look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family.”

More than 40,000 runners are taking part in the 39th London Marathon today in a record year for applicants, while the money raised since the event began is set to pass the £1 billion mark.
