Royal baby: Bookies reveal how many bet on Archie as woman scoops £18k

Meghan and Harry's choice of Royal baby name REVEALED by proud Meghan Markle and Prince Harry for their son has gone "down as one of the biggest surprises in Royal betting history," one bookmaker has said.

Around 72 percent of all bets placed between Monday and today were on Alexander, Spencer or Arthur.

But one lucky punter is celebrating the moniker choice after scooping £18,000 from it.

The unnamed woman put an £120 bet on Archie at 150/1 and saw a return of £18,120, according to bookmakers.tv

She said: "The reason I went for Archie was because my grandson, who is born on the same day as the Prince, is named Archie, so I thought I’d go for a cheeky bet as perhaps my Archie would bring some luck.

"And here I am, £18,000 richer; the money though, I’m going to put aside for my grandson.”

Meanwhile, Ladbrokes revealed just 60 bets were placed on the moniker at 100/1, amounting to exactly £100.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Harry and Meghan have settled for a 100/1 shot in the betting and we couldn’t be more pleased for the happy couple.”

Coral was also offering 100/1 on Harry and Meghan naming their son Archie before they revealed the name late this afternoon.

Alexander had been the 4/1 favourite, with Spencer, Arthur and James all well backed with the firm.

Coral’s John Hill said: “We only took a handful of bets on Archie so this has to go down as one of the biggest surprises in Royal betting history as it was a 100/1 outsider before the name was revealed.”

Prince Harry and Meghan are odds-on at 4-5 to announce they are having a second child in 2020.

“It would be no surprise if the royal couple revealed at some point next year that little Archie will be having a brother or sister,” added Hill.

The pair made the name announcement on their Instagram account.

They said: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are pleased to announce they have named their first born child: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

"This afternoon Their Royal Highnesses introduced Her Majesty The Queen to her eighth great-grandchild at Windsor Castle. The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess' mother were also present for this special occasion."

Meanwhile earlier today, Paddy Power slashed the odds on the newborn being called Theodore.

The Irish bookmakers saw the odds tumble from 16/1 to 5/1 following a surge of bets on the moniker.

The favourite name was Alexander at 7/2, but Theodore was close behind.

Second-favourites Spencer and James were (both 4/1) and level with Arthur and Albert.
