Royal Australian Mint launches Willy Wonka-style treasure hunt

The Royal Australian Mint has launched a Willy Wonka-style treasure hunt, but instead of searching for a golden ticket entrants need to track down a set of specially marked $1 coins to be eligible for a prize.

The mint is releasing 3 million $1 coins bearing the letters A, U and S as part of its Dollar Discovery initiative.

Collectors must find all three before April 8 for a chance to win.

The coins are also marked with the number 35 in honour of the dollar coin's 35th anniversary

"Australia's Dollar Discovery is a nationwide treasure hunt that we hope encourages Australians of all ages and from every state and territory to check their change for these special coins," Royal Australian Mint chief executive officer Ross MacDiarmid said.

The Mint said it hoped the program would "encourage a whole new generation of collectors both young and old, who will not only collect these coins but also be reminded of the value of a dollar".

Eight major prize winners will be selected — one from each state and territory.

The prize includes return flights to Canberra, two nights' accommodation at a wildlife lodge and a VIP tour of the mint.

While at the Mint, winners will also strike their own 1 kilogram pure silver coin.
