Royal Ascot 2021: Bookies fearing Frankie Dettori 'massacre' 25 years on from 'magnificent 7' triumph

Bookies are fearing another "massacre" at the hands of Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot this week.

In September 1996, the Italian jockey achieved a near-impossible feat and won all seven races on a card at Ascot.

Now, nearly 25 years on at the age of 50, Dettori is eyeing his third consecutive top jockey crown at Royal Ascot.

Paddy Power said: "England looking good in an international tournament, Frankie Dettori scaring bookmakers - all we need now is Spice Girls to be number 1 and we'll have fully gone back to 1996.

"It's been 25 years of PTSD for the bookmaking industry and it could be happening all over again as punters will be hoping Dettori can take the shirt off my back.

"A topless bookie definitely doesn't meet Royal Ascot's strict dress code."

Dettori will kick off the week riding Palace Pier - the a red-hot 4/9 favourite in the opening race the Queen Anne Stakes at 2.30 on Tuesday.

His odds to be named leading jockey have been cut to 6/4.
