Roy Torrens tributes paid as legendary Irish cricket figure passes away

Tributes have been paid to legendary Irish cricket figure Roy Torrens following his death at the age of 72.

The former international pace bowler represented Ireland 30 times and went on to become national team manager.

Torrens, who also played Irish League football for Coleraine and Ballymena United, played for Brigade and took 77 wickets during his time playing for Ireland.

His time as national manager witnessed some incrdible success for Irish cricket, notably wins against Pakistan, England and West Indies at successive World Cups in 2007, 2011 and 2015.

Torrens was also awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2009.

Cricket Ireland chairman Ross McCollum said Torrens was "an inspiration to all he met".

He added: “I am greatly saddened to learn of the loss of our great friend, Roy Torrens.

"Roy was a truly remarkable character, an immense presence in Irish cricket, and a truly great friend - not just personally, but to many people within and outside the cricket family.

“He was a player, a team manager, a President and - most importantly - an inspiration to all he met.

“It goes without saying, but we will miss him greatly and our hearts go out to Joan, the family and his friends at this time.”

Brigade Cricket Club, where Torrens served as chairman, said: "It is with great sadness that the Officers, Players and Members of Brigade Cricket Club extend our deepest sympathies to Joan, Andrea, Judith, Joanne and the Torrens family on the death of our Chairman Roy Torrens.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family circle."

Muckamore CC tweeted: "Condolences from everyone at Moylena a great friend of everyone connected with the club and a sad loss to @brigade1906 @Irelandcricket "

Former Ireland international Ryan Haire added: "Terrible news ! A great character who will be sorely missed at all levels of Irish cricket. Condolences to the family circle. RIP Roy."
