Roy Moore, the Republican candidate who lost Alabama's Senate race, has reached out to his supporters to help him raise money to pay for legal bills after a woman who accused him of sexual misconduct filed a lawsuit against him.
Moore's campaign sent an email Wednesday asking supporters to donate to his legal defense fund because he needs to fight accuser Leigh Corfman's suit, according to TV station WHNT in Huntsville, Ala.
The email says people including lawyer Gloria Allred and The Washington Post have slandered his reputation and character, which cost him a seat in the Senate, the TV station reported.
"This is a legal defense fund to be used only for legal fees and expenses in the prosecution and defense of the false and malicious attacks on my wife, family, and me," the email says.
Moore says he has "very minimal" resources after losing the race in December to newly elected Democratic Sen. Doug Jones, and needs to raise up to $250,000 to battle Corfman in court.
In November, The Post reported about Moore's alleged sexual misconduct involving several teenagers, including Corfman. He was in his 30s, and she was 14 at the time.
Corfman filed a defamation suit claiming Moore had made false statements against her and is demanding a public apology.
