Roy Makaay and the potential Rangers reunion with beer club partner as incoming coach recalls bitter Feyenoord exit

Incoming Rangers coach Roy Makaay has told how he discovered he'd been binned by Feyenoord by reading the Dutch press.

The former Bayern Munich striker is set to assist Gio van Bronckhorst as he takes over as new Ibrox boss.

Makaay was also one of the manager's trusted lieutenants at de Kuip and remained when Jaap Stam took the helm.

He remained when Jaap Stam took over after Van Bronckhorst left, but received an almighty shock the day after the former Manchester United defender quit.

Out of football when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the Netherlands into lockdown, Makaay took up brewing beer with another former Feyenoord coach - Jean-Paul van Gastel - whom Rangers are also looking to bring in to help van Bronckhorst.

Makaay recalled: "Jaap Stam resigned at the time and we, the members of his coaching staff, learned of our dismissal from the newspaper the next day.

"It's okay for a club to want to go a new way. But the fact that you can't say that to the face of long-term employees and use the press for that was pretty disappointing.

"Myself and Jean-Paul van Gastel were both dismissed from Feyenoord at the same time in 2019. Our wives suggested that we brew beer together. It's a nice hobby for me, especially during lockdown.

"I love drinking beer. I don't drink every day, but once or twice a week - I like that.

"It was the same when I was a player. At Bayern, we often drank a wheat beer or two on the bus after the games. I know that this is no longer necessarily fashionable for a professional footballer. But back then, it was just part of it.

"I miss the wheat beers we used to get in Munich. I like stronger beers, at about seven per cent. So we set up the beer brewing production and I often oversaw the process.

"We've had nothing but positive feedback. We sell enough to cover the costs, but we don't care about the money. We brew beer because we like it.

"I still love football and I watch a lot of games and occasionally work as a TV expert for the German or Spanish league. I would also like to work as an assistant coach again."
