Roy Keane would deliver Celtic instant title glory claims David Meyler as Ireland cap hits back at 'dinosaur' claims

David Meyler has backed former boss Roy Keane to bring the title to Parkhead next season if handed the Celtic job.

Meyler played under Keane during his time as Sunderland boss and also when he was working under Martin O'Neill as Ireland assistant boss.

Having reportedly put himself in the frame to replace Neil Lennon at Celtic, criticism has been levelled at Keane for the time he has been out of the dugout with his last top job coming during an ill-fated stay with Ipswich.

However, Meyler doesn't believe there is a better fit for the club that former player Keane.

Speaking on Off The Ball AM, he believes if Dermot Desmond takes the gamble on Keane they will immediately take the Premiership title back from Rangers.

The former Hull City star also hit back at critics of the Sky Sports pundit, insisting he has the tactical nous to overcome Steven Gerrard's newly-crowned champions.

Myler said: “People will say he has been out of management for the best part of 10 years.

"The old barstool managers will say that he is out of touch with the modern game, but Celtic have had a very disappointing year.

“You think of the Nine in a Row and you are on for 10 and it’s great. You believe your own hype and then Rangers are incredible with the season they have had, but I think Roy was to go in there, he would bring that winning mentality.

"If you look at the impact that he had at Sunderland, because Celtic will be low, they will be flat because Rangers have blown them out of the water this season which is unheard of.

"I would love to see Roy take over Celtic. I think he would turn them around next season and I think they’d be challenging, and I think they’d beat Rangers.

"Roy has a certain mentality. He is so used to winning, and that is Celtic, in the sense that Celtic are used to winning and don’t like losing to Rangers. Roy has the winning mentality and the hunger and I think that would iron out a few problems quickly, and I would expect them to win the Scottish league title next season.

"There is always this thing that people say they are dinosaurs and don’t know what they are doing, but most managers played the game and went through the eras where things have changed.

"He would give Celtic a lift and I think he is tactically aware. He knows the game inside out. He would bring the hard work and drive for success.

"I know he’s itching to get back into management and it’s a good fit for all parties."
