Roy Keane warned to plot next move wisely following Nottingham Forest exit

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has warned Roy Keane to pick his next move wisely as the Irishman looks to return to management.

The Manchester United legend left his role at Nottingham Forest on Sunday after just five months as Martin O'Neill's number two.

And he has already found himself high in the betting to land jobs with a number of clubs, including Doncaster Rovers and Derby County.

He has also been tipped to cross the Midlands to join Birmingham and fill the void left at St. Andrews by Garry Monk, who was sacked earlier this month.

But Hendrie believes that a role with Blues, who were handed a nine-pointed deduction last season for breaching the Football League's profitability and sustainability rules, would not be top of his list were he to find himself in Keane's position.

"If he is going to be linked with the Birmingham City job, I think it's such a big job for him to go and take on," he told talkSPORT.

"Especially having come out of the managerial side for quite some time, I think it has to be the right job for him.

"I wouldn't say Birmingham City is the best job in the world for him to take on.

"With what we have seen go on there during the past few years, the talk of Gary Rowett, why did he leave the club? Even Harry [Redknapp] being there. This is a big decision for Roy, if it is to be.

"We had him at Aston Villa and I found him to be a fantastic guy. I liked the way he's got that steel about him. I like the way he talks to people. That was the way I was brought up. These days it is a big change in management."

Since Monk's departure, Birmingham have said that they are not on the lookout for a new manager, having handed Spaniard Pep Clotet the reins on an interim basis.

According to the bookmakers, Keane favourite instead to become Doncaster's next permanent manager (4/1) and remains an outsider to succeed Frank Lampard at Pride Park (16/1).
