Roy Keane tipped for Celtic glory as former Manchester United team mate licks lips at Steven Gerrard rivalry

Former Manchester United winger Keith Gillespie reckons Roy Keane is just the man to take Celtic by the horns and flip the script on Steven Gerrard's Rangers.

Keane has emerged as the favourite to take the Parkhead job after Micah Richards teased fans with a cryptic tweet that many believed was about his fellow pundit.

He's since poured cold water over that, but Keane remains the favourite with bookies to succeed Neil Lennon as their next permanent boss.

There has been much scepticism over whether Keane has the same credentials as the likes of Chris Wilder, Enzo Maresca or Eddie Howe.

But some have suggested his brand of no-nonsense management could help steady the Celtic ship in their time of need.

And Gillespie, who played alongside the Irishman at United before joining Newcastle in 1995, reckons it could work.

In an interview with FootballFanCast, he said Keane would command instant respect from the dressing room.

And he relishes the potential rivalry he could start with Liverpool hero and Rangers boss Gerrard.

“They need somebody who is a name and I think it would be very interesting," he said.

"If he does (join Celtic), you’ve got that rivalry of Gerrard and Keane, which adds a little bit more spice to it. But they’re so far behind Rangers this season that they need something to change.

“I think players will obviously respect him, they’ll listen to him as a pundit. And so they’ll know that he doesn’t pull any punches.

“You’d like to think that the players would react and he’s worked under Brian Clough, he’s worked under Alex Ferguson. Two great managers.

“So you’d like to think that some of what he’s learned off them will rub off.”
