Roy Keane stuns football fans by claiming he was a 'very average' player

Roy Keane stunned football fans after Manchester United's win over Chelsea by claiming he was a "very average" player.

The Cork native won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three Community Shields and a Champions League in a very decorated career.

But Keane surprised supporters on Monday night by saying the key to his career was "working with very good players".

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "I could do anything you want. I was more of a sitting midfielder as I got older. I'd fancy my changes in there to do a job.

"Absolutely no chance (the best midfielder in Premier League history). I was very average and I was very lucky. The key to my career was working with very good players who almost carried me along."

But plenty of people disagreed with Keane's comments on himself.

One Twitter user said: "Give over will you, United had average players like Phil Neville, O'Shea, Fletcher, Anderson. Roy Keane was far from average, he was their leader and best player for years. They have would 3/4 less PLs without him."

Another commented: "Average??He captained Man Utd and made almost 350 appearances. Every team from any era would love a Roy Keane in their side. Superb player and one of the best midfielders to grace the premier league."

Someone else added: "Love Roy. Very humble about himself being in that team saying he was average, far from it. He was absolutely sensational. Love how he talks about Irwin, Beckham, Yorke & Cole. Particularly Beckham, if Roy Keane respects you as a player that’s enough."

Another stated: "Roy Keane saying he was an average player carried by his team mates goes to show how humble he is. Quality player and one of the best. Any fan would want him in their team."
