Roy Keane slams 'pure greed' of breakaway European Super League plans

Roy Keane has labelled plans for a breakaway European Super League as 'pure greed' in a damning verdict on the shocking announcement.

Keane's former club Manchester United along with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham, announced their plan to join the new tournament in a joint statement that rocked football.

The new tournament would run alongside the clubs' participation in their domestic leagues, and serve as a money-spinning replacement for the UEFA Champions League, which had been due to announce new reforms on Monday.

And the Ireland legend hopes that FIFA will step in to stop the plans in their tracks before it's established.

"I think it comes down to money and greed," he said on Sky Sports.

"Obviously we've heard nothing from FIFA yet but it doesn’t sound good. Let’s hope it’s stopped in its tracks.

"We talk about the big clubs. Bayern Munich are one of the biggest clubs in the world – at least they’ve made a stand, which is a good start."

"Let's hope it is stopped in its tracks. It's just pure greed."
