Roy Keane slams Newcastle United's "poor mindset" after lacklustre Arsenal defeat

Roy Keane has accused Newcastle United players of having an ingrained "poor mindset" after a limp performance against Arsenal.

The Magpies were beaten 2-0 by the Gunners at St James' Park, with goals from Mohamed Elneny and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang either side of half-time securing a routine victory.

Despite the defeat, Newcastle's safety seems all but secured, with Steve Bruce's side boasting a nine-point gap over Fulham, with only four games left to be played.

However, after a lacklustre display against an 11th-placed Arsenal side, Keane accused the Newcastle squad of having a "poor mentality".

“They played like that, the points gap they have to the bottom now, it looks like it’s going to be fine," Keane told Sky Sports.

"Obviously, they’ve had a decent run recently, but there was no intensity to their play like they were already on their holidays. It was an easy afternoon for Arsenal, but Newcastle certainly never turned up and that is going to be a problem for Brucey now in the last few weeks to get them going again and say they still want a couple of victories.

"What about climbing the table, chasing the teams in front of them? If they keep focusing on surviving and staying ahead of the teams behind you, then you’re going to stay down in that area.

"Today was a good example for Newcastle to get at that Arsenal team who had made a lot of changes, but Newcastle, we wonder every season why they’re struggling because there’s a really poor mindset from their players.”
