Roy Keane sends Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard transfer message amid West Ham link

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has advised Jesse Lingard to look away from Old Trafford for regular first team football.

Lingard spent the second half of the 2020-21 campaign on loan at West Ham where he hit the ground running before going onto score nine goals and grabbed four assists in 16 Premier League matches.

Hammers manager David Moyes made no secret of his desire for Lingard to remain with the Hammers for the new campaign but as yet no deal has been struck between the two clubs.

Lingard returned to Manchester United following the end of his loan and has played a full part in the Red Devils pre-season until he tested positive for Covid-19 last week.

Despite his involvement in the preparations for the new season, Keane believes Manchester United should be looking to move Lingard on from the club.

"Jesse Lingard, the players like that in the background, they’re [Manchester United] going to have to shift them on," Keane told the Overlap.

"I don't think [he has done enough to stay]. I don't think Jesse Lingard is going to get Man United back challenging for titles.

"I think he did well at West Ham and maybe that type of club is a good club for him."

Towards the end of last season, Moyes made his desire for Lingard to stay clear but as yet no move has been forthcoming.

"I'm hopeful that in some way that Jesse chooses that he might want to come here," Moyes said.

"But we don't know, that's down to Manchester United at the end of the time. He has been really good for us and it's been a positive signing and good news for us since he started in January when we brought him in."

Despite the Scot's clear intention to move for Lingard the England international remains at Old Trafford and was involved in all Manchester United's pre-season matches until his positive Covid-19 test.

West Ham are yet to replace Lingard with a senior signing with the club so far only bringing in Alphonse Areola on loan and a number of teenage prospects.
