Roy Keane's most memorable moments and explosive rants of 2021

2021 was another memorable year for Roy Keane as he continued to entertain in his role as a Sky Sports pundit.

The Man Utd and Ireland legend brought fans some hilarious as well as controversial moments in 2021.

From funny Instagram posts to witty responses, heated arguments and rants around the Red Devils, Keano proved to be a must-watch all year long.

Keane was also linked with some surprising roles throughout 2021 from becoming the next Celtic boss to appearing as a guest on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here

And as we look back on 2021, here's some of his most memorable moments of the year:

Harry Maguire and Man Utd rant

There's only one place to start when it comes to Keane's most memorable moments, it's his scorching rant the week after Man Utd's 5-0 Liverpool loss at the end of October.

Keane didn't hold back on his former club as signalled out several players for criticism.

"It was an embarrassing performance,” he said on Sky Sports.

“I heard Bryan Robson speak during the week, who was obviously a great player for Manchester United and a man full of courage, and he felt that the players gave up which I think is the biggest insult you can give to a professional footballer. Unacceptable.

He added: "There was a lot of talk coming out this week, a lot of rubbish from players, apologies left right and centre. It’s no good.

“It’s all rubbish, all that kind of nonsense coming out from players and team [Marcus] Rashford and [Harry] Maguire.

"Maguire and [Luke] Shaw last week, they were a disgrace. An absolute disgrace to the club. And these are established international footballers. Wan-Bissaka - I don’t even think Palace would take him back now. He’s not good enough for Manchester United. No feel for the ball. No decision making.

“But what Manchester United have always had over the years, no matter talented players, is players with character and personalities. I don’t see it with this group.

“I heard Maguire talking during the week. He was like a robot. He was like, ‘Apologies to the fans…’ There was no emotion behind it. And these guys are on the back of good European Championships for England. They have turned up before for big matches. But recently… and Shaw has fallen back into his old habits from a few years ago.

“I’m fed up with his chat after games with people apologising. Harry Maguire talking about ‘we need to come together as a group’. No, you need to sort your game out."

Rangers Scottish Premiership win response

Roy Keane (Sky Sports)

Keane had no kind words for Rangers after their Scottish Premiership win earlier this year, stopping his former club Celtic from winning a tenth title in a row.

"For Rangers? No," Keane said when asked if he had any words of celebration for Rangers on Sky Sports.

"Listen, it's obviously been a tough year for Celtic. But they'll bounce back next year like all great clubs do."

Jamie Carragher argument

On Sky Sports duty alongside ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher, the pair got into a heated back-and-forth over the reason Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Man Utd.

Keane said: "Ronaldo was never going to get United back to winning titles."

"So what was the point in signing him then?!" Carragher shot back. "He’s 37!"

The two continued in a similar vein, getting progressively more angry, before they got back into snappy responses in some gripping TV.

"He’s not come back to win the league," Keane said.

Carragher: "So what’s he come back for?! What’s he here for then?"

Keane: "When you won the FA Cup were you not buzzing with that? United are a cup team at the moment."

Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell criticism

(ITV)

Keano weighed in on one of the big stories of Euro 2020 after England duo Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell were forced into a period of isolation.

The Three Lions stars were forced into quarantine after chatting alongside Scotland's Billy Gilmour after their clash, with Gilmour testing positive shortly afterwards.

On ITV punditry, he said: “I think the other thing I'd be critical of is why you'd want to speak to an opposition player, I don't care if he's your team-mate or not, for over 20 minutes.

“I very rarely speak to anybody for over five minutes. After a game, where you've been to war against somebody, why would you want to chat to them for that long?

“They could have used a bit more common sense.”

Heated exchange with Man Utd fans at Old Trafford

Keane made headlines after a video went viral that showed him in a heated exchange with a Man Utd fan at Old Trafford.

And shortly afterwards, Keane elaborated on the confrontation as he claimed that fans would know if they seen him in an angry exchange.

"I [had] done the game. An hour afterwards I’m ready to leave. [I had forgotten] to put on my Covid mask and cap. So I’m signing autographs, usual stuff, no manners," Keane explained.

"This guy stops me. He has got two jerseys. Dealers, they know when you’ll be coming out after the TV.

"They spot you a mile away, they’re waiting. Who goes to watch United against City with two replica Keane 16 shirts in a plastic bag?

"I’m signing these jerseys for the guy and I’m saying I don’t want to be here all day, and this other guy is pissed so he calls me a prick.

"He doesn’t see that I’m just having fun with the dealer.

"I wasn’t going to stand there under the tunnel at Old Trafford and explain: 'Do you know what? You got the wrong end of the stick.'"

"I just said, ‘Look, you’ve had a few drinks,’ and that was me being unbelievably mature, which is unlike me.

"The clip goes on social media. People say I was angry. That’s not me angry. There’s plenty levels beyond that, trust me."

'Bad champions' Liverpool

(TWITTER@skysportspl)

As Liverpool's Premier League defence faltered in January and February this year, the Reds were easily beaten by the soon-to-be champions Man City.

And Keane took it upon himself to have a pop at the Merseyside club as he described them as 'bad champions' in a scorching assessment.

Keane said: “They’ve been bad champions and I just don’t mean today.

“You’re Liverpool Football Club. If you keep performing like that it’ll be another 30 years before you win the league title, trust me.”

Keane continued: “I can’t figure this group out. I think they’ve all believed the hype over the last year or two.

“It’s as if they’ve won the league last year and they've all got carried away and believed their own hype.

“In my mindset when you won a league title, your next challenge was can you do it again.

“You never got the impression from this group, even from their manager last year, when they won it.

“It was almost, let’s enjoy this. It was a long wait for them, 30 years, but I never heard any of the players come out and say ‘let’s do it again’.

“They’re now talking about trying to get in top four from winning the league last year. I think they’ve been bad.”

Hilarious Instagram posts

One element of the Boys in Green hero fans have been given a glimpse of this year is his personal life.

Keane has been known to keep his family and personal life private throughout his career, but fans have gotten a front row seat since he joined Instagram.

And Keane has delighted fans with hilarious Instagram posts, including trolling his wife and some brilliant snaps alongside his children and grandchildren.
