Roy Keane's incredible comeback that shut Mick McCarthy up in front of Ireland teammates

Roy Keane's lack of respect for Mick McCarthy's playing ability was obvious even in the early days of the Ireland legend's international career when the big centre-back was his captain.

Niall Quinn illustrated as such with one particular anecdote from a drinking session that he, Keane, Ronnie Whelan and a few others had partaken in much to McCarthy's chagrin.

We'll let the former target man lay the whole story out from here...

He told Virgin Media: "It might have been around '92, around the time Roy first got into the side.

"We went out to play in a tournament and we didn't acquit ourselves very well but we went on the beer for a day and a half afterwards.

"Some of us were late getting back to the bus and Jack had already gone to the airport and left Mick in charge.

"As we got on the bus one by one Mick ate the head off us. 'How dare ya. You're a disgrace Niall Quinn, you should know better. Who do you think you are coming this late Ronnie Whelan.'

"And then it came to Roy and Mick just went 'First trip...disgrace.'

"And Roy just went 'First touch...disgrace!'

"The whole bus erupted going 'oh my god, that's the most incredible comeback I've ever heard.

"And you were kind of rooting for him in one way while we were all friends with Mick. It was just 'wow, this bloke is afraid of nothing.

"Because Mick would've been tougher to deal with than Jack."

Yikes. While it's often admirable how Keane isn't one for being subtle, you can easily see why he would've rubbed plenty of people up the wrong way too.

And open resentment like that would only fester between the two when Mick succeeded Jack Charlton as manager - ultimately robbing us of a chance to rival or even better the Italia 90 run at the 2002 World Cup.
