Roy Keane recalls arguing over X Factor with Wayne Rooney at Man Utd

Roy Keane has admitted having a run-in with Wayne Rooney at Man Utd over X Factor.

The pair crossed paths at Old Trafford towards the tail end of Keane's career, when Rooney was still a boisterous youngster, who was swiftly developing a reputation as a bit of a prankster.

And it didn't take Rooney long to pick on captain Keane, who himself was no stranger to confrontation.

Rooney told Sky Sports' Monday Night Football previously: "I always remember my first away trip I got into an argument with Keane.

"Roy was watching the rugby the night before, we were playing Newcastle away, and Roy went to the toilet so I turned over and put X Factor on and hid the remote.

"He wasn’t happy about it. But straight away he respected me more for it, for having a go back at him."

Asked about the incident on Sky Sports’ The Football Show, Keane recalled it slightly differently.

"I did like my rugby league, and someone did change the channel," Keane said. "We didn’t have an argument about it because the next day I come down for breakfast and Wayne said ‘did you find the controls?’ and I told him where to go, and that was it really. If that’s an argument then god help us.

"But I certainly didn’t respect Wayne because he squared up to me because he wanted to watch the X Factor or whatever it was.

"I had a lot of respect for Wayne anyway because I thought he was a brilliant player."

Gary Neville chimed in: "I remember you did go up to your room quite quickly that night."

Keane replied: "You talk about pressure of the game and we’re arguing about X Factor, that’s what really happens in the dressing room or hotel."

Keane went on to reveal he struggled to interact with his United teammates in his final days at the club, with Rooney among those he had little in common with.

"I wouldn’t say I warmed to the guy," Keane added. "I certainly didn’t dislike him.

"But the lads were on a different wavelength, different banter, and if hiding the controls was their type of banter then…not for me."
