Roy Keane once had a doner kebab three hours before playing for Manchester United

Roy Keane has revealed he once had a doner kebab just three hours before playing for Manchester United.

The former Republic of Ireland captain had the snack prior to an FA cup game against Crystal Palace, believed to have been in 1995.

Keane made the revelation on Micah & Roy's Road To Wembley for Sky Bet.

He explained: "I played a cup game before - Crystal Palace at home - and three hours before the game, I had a kebab. Doner kebab from the chipper.

Asked how he could run after eating it, Keane replied: "Because when you were younger, you'd get away with it but obviously you pay for it later on.

"You think you're getting away with it, you think you have a laugh about it, you think you're a bit of a Jack the Lad.

"In fairness though, I lived by myself. I didn't have any food in the house."

Keane was discussing Phil Foden having his own chef when he made the revelation, adding that eating the right foods at the right times will hugely benefit the young England star's career.

He said: "Foden's probably fueling up properly. He's probably having a proper breakfast, he's recovering, he's eating proper foods at the right time.

"Look at Ronaldo. So, Foden will get the bennefits also when he's 36, 37. Guarantee he'll still be playing at a high level."
