Roy Keane leaves Nottingham Forest as Martin O'Neill's trusted assistant makes shock exit

Roy Keane has quit his position as Nottingham Forest assistant manager.

The former Manchester United man joined up with former Martin O'Neill just five months ago as the former Celtic boss took his place in the hotseat at the City Ground.

It's understood Keane wants to resurrect his management career, and has left the club with O'Neill's blessing.

The United legend said of his decision: "Working with Martin over the last few years has been a magnificent experience, one of my greatest in football both as a player and a coach and one I want to personally thank him for.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have thanked the former Republic of Ireland captain for his services, adding: "Roy would like to express his gratitude to the club’s owner, board of directors, the staff, the players and, in particular, manager Martin O’Neill for the opportunity to return to the City Ground.

"The former Red would also like to place on record his appreciation to the supporters who have welcomed him back so warmly since his appointment in January. Everyone at the club would like to wish Roy the very best in the next stage of his career."

It is unsure what Keane's next move will be, with the former Sunderland and Ipswich Town boss having been out of management since 2011.

The 47-year-old previously led Sunderland to the top flight of English football before departing the Mackems in December 2009.
