Roy Keane has taken aim at “soft” Arsenal by pointing out the end of the table they’re currently competing in with a comment about surviving relegation.
The Gunners were beaten 2-1 by Wolves on Sunday, leaving them with just two home wins from five attempts this season and only one victory at all in their last six in the Premier League.
That win came against Manchester United and some suggested it was a turning point for Mikel Arteta’s team, but Keane pointed out that the team mentality hasn’t been strong enough despite those three points.
“A few weeks ago the cheerleaders were out when they had a decent performance up at United," he said on Sky Sports.
“They’ve had one point since then, lost the other two games, and I think they look soft.
“They are probably lacking a bit of confidence. I didn’t see that real fight the manager was talking about. I didn’t see that desire or determination to get a result.”
It won’t get much easier next time out for Arsenal, as they face north London rivals and current league leaders Tottenham after a midweek Europa League game, and Keane pointedly joked that the red half of that rivalry are competing at the opposite end at present, sat in 14th place.
“They all seem big at the moment, don’t they? That might be the best game for them to have next week – a derby, no supporters, going away means less pressure maybe than at home?
“But I still think Arsenal have enough to stay up, I think; they’ll be strong enough to stay in the division.”
Arsenal have scored only twice in their last six league games, but an easy Europa League group has at least offered some respite and straight-forward victories.
