Roy Keane issues Chelsea challenge that will hurt Manchester United following Spurs draw

Roy Keane says Chelsea have a great opportunity to secure their spot in the top four.

The Blues return to Premier League action tomorrow when they travel to Aston Villa, knowing that a win will take them five points clear of Manchester United in the race for the top four.

Fifth-placed United last night went two points behind Chelsea with a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, but they left it late to get anything from the game as Bruno Fernandes scored an 81st-minute equaliser from the penalty spot.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane said it was a poor result for his former club and that it had handed Chelsea big opportunity against Aston Villa.

He said: "I think Tottenham are going to be short.

"I think Mourinho will be delighted with the performance of his team tonight. A couple of bad injuries and stopping a bad run they had before the break in football.

"I think he’ll be delighted. Deep down, he’ll know, I don’t think they’ll do it.

"If you're in the United dressing room, I’d be disappointed.

"They’re running out of games, and with Leicester and Chelsea, they’re running out of opportunities to close that gap.

"I think it’s a great opportunity now for Chelsea to make it an even worse result for United, by winning."

Keane also argued that the Blues would be one of the teams to benefit most from the decision to allow five substitutions a game.

"I think it’s a huge decision to say you can bring five substitutes on," he said. "It’s half your outfield players.

"With the strength in-depth that United have, obviously, City, Liverpool and Chelsea - I think it’s a huge advantage.

"Saying that, if you class Tottenham as a big club, then it’s their own fault for not having that strength in-depth.

"It had a huge bearing on the game tonight. Mourinho mentioned there about not having options as a manager.

"If you’re Ole, looking over your shoulder and seeing his bench, my goodness, what an opportunity he has to throw players on and change the course of the game - as he did tonight.

"United really should’ve won the game, but the five subs is a huge advantage for the so-called big clubs."
