Roy Keane has sympathy for Manchester United's Harry Maguire after England red card

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has said that he feels 'sympathy' for Harry Maguire after his red card against Denmark for England.

The defender picked up two yellow cards in the opening 30 minutes to receive his marching orders, with England going on to lose 1-0 after a Christian Eriksen penalty.

That has seen the scrutiny on the former Leicester City man rise, following on from United's 6-1 defeat to Tottenham prior to the international break.

However, Maguire has received vocal support from his England colleagues and the usually hard-hitting Keane has not been harsh with his verdict on the situation.

Gareth Southgate backing Harry Maguire to bounce back after being sent off for England

"I think because his confidence is so low, sometimes from a defender's point of view you're thinking that if you can put a good challenge in on somebody, you can help their form and their confidence," he told ITV.

"But this goes back to his decision making, why he feels he needs to make this tackle so high up the pitch, and his touch (for the second challenge) puts him in danger.

"I have a lot of sympathy for Maguire, obviously what is going on in his head, it's all over the place and you can see with him, as soon as he sees the red card coming out, you have to have sympathy for him.

"Gareth Southgate mentioned that he has got the full support but I think sometimes in a situation like that, when he knows somebody is having a really tough time on and off the pitch, I think a pat on the back would have helped him considering he knows exactly how low the player is at the moment."
