Roy Keane hands challenge to Dean Henderson to prove he should be Manchester United number one

Roy Keane has told Dean Henderson he must prove to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he should be Manchester United's number one goalkeeper in the coming matches.

The Englishman has started United's last two Premier League matches with David de Gea unavailable following the birth of his first child.

The MEN understands Henderson has been 'frustrated' by his lack of playing time in the Premier League and has no intention of playing second fiddle to De Gea again next season.

With Solskjaer suggesting the Spaniard could miss another couple of games, handing Henderson an extended run in the Premier League, Keane has claimed the 23-year-old must prove himself as the club's future number one during this period of matches.

"I think so (he’s ready). They like him at the club, he went out on loan, he’s come back in, as Ole said earlier he’s played a few games," Keane told Sky Sports. "I think he certainly has the personality to come into a big game. He’s been desperate, he’s been inpatient, it’s worked out well for him with De Gea heading back to Spain.

"Sometimes you need a bit of luck in your career, he’s got this opportunity, he’s got to take it. He’s got to say to Ole in the next few games that he believes he’s Manchester United’s future number one and to give him the job.”

Speaking before the match when asked about Henderson starting, Solskjaer said: "He's been ready whenever he's played.

"It won't be a resting pillow for him knowing he'll play one or two more before David is back in. It's an opportunity for him to go and show what he's done all year in training.

"He's played in the Carabao Cup semi-final against City, the FA Cup against Liverpool so he knows what it's about."
