Roy Keane gives scathing verdict on Manchester United transfer target Declan Rice

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has laid into West Ham star Declan Rice.

The Hammers' midfielder was recalled by Gareth Southgate to the England team for their final Group A clash against Kosovo.

England secured their place at next summer's European Championships with a 7-0 win over Montenegro on Thursday night.

However, with qualification secured, Southgate has tinkered with his side, bringing in Rice to partner Harry Winks and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who both played on Thursday.

The 20-year-old hasn't started for England since their shock 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic last month, with Winks instead preferred in the holding midfield position.

Rice has been reported as a long-term target for United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to reshape his midfield and MEN Sport understand United hold an interest in the youngster.

However, United legend Keane has ripped into Rice, when questioned what the midfielder must improve on to cement a place in the team.

Speaking to ITV before the Kosovo match, he said: "Where he needs to improve, there are plenty of aspects when you think about it.

"Over the last few months he has had a lot of praise, I worked with him when he was with the Ireland squad.

"Where does he need to improve, where do you want me to start? His positional play, I don't think is consistent enough, he doesn't stay with runners, he's sloppy in possession.

"I can go on. He's one of those players, a couple of months ago everyone was enjoying him and loved him. He's one of those players that's now played his way out of the team because he's not been consistent for West Ham.

"He's got another opportunity tonight and it's clearly a position in the England team where Gareth (Southgate) isn't quite sure who is going to do that job in the team.

"He plays there regularly for West Ham so it is an opportunity for him tonight but he's got to take it."
