Roy Keane fires transfer warning to Tottenham Hotspur after Manchester United draw

Roy Keane says Tottenham Hotspur will struggle to take advantage of the five substitutions rule - and it's their own fault.

Spurs led against Manchester United in their first Premier League game back but faded in the second half before conceding a late equaliser.

Whilst United were able to send on Paul Pogba off the bench, with the French midfielder putting in a game-turning display, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho claimed post-match that he had no way of reacting to the game with substitutions.

Speaking on Sky Sports post-match, former United midfielder Keane agreed and said Spurs need more depth if they want to continue being considered a big side.

Twitter reacts to Harry Maguire's defending vs Tottenham

"I think it’s a huge decision to say you can bring five substitutes on," he said. "It’s half your outfield players.

"With the strength in-depth that United have, obviously, City, Liverpool and Chelsea - I think it’s a huge advantage.

"Saying that, if you class Tottenham as a big club, then it’s their own fault for not having that strength in-depth.

"It had a huge bearing on the game tonight. Mourinho mentioned there about not having options as a manager.

"If you’re Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, looking over your shoulder and seeing his bench, my goodness, what an opportunity he has to throw players on and change the course of the game - as he did tonight.

"United really should’ve won the game, but the five subs is a huge advantage for the so-called big clubs."

Keane also said he felt Spurs' top-four chances were all over but that Mourinho should be satisfied with his side's performance.

He said: "I think Tottenham are going to be short.

"I think Mourinho will be delighted with the performance of his team tonight.

"A couple of bad injuries and stopping a bad run they had before the break in football. I think he’ll be delighted.

"Deep down, he’ll know, I don’t think they’ll do it. If you're in the United dressing room, I’d be disappointed.

"They’re running out of games, and with Leicester and Chelsea, they’re running out of opportunities to close that gap.

"I think it’s a great opportunity now for Chelsea to make it an even worse result for United, by winning."
