Roy Keane didn't like how Steve Bruce was treated at end of Manchester United career

Roy Keane did not like how Steve Bruce was treated at the end of his Manchester United career and believes the idea that Sir Alex Ferguson always did what was best for the club was 'nonsense'.

Bruce lifted a dozen trophies during his time at Old Trafford and formed a rock-solid partnership alongside Gary Pallister at the heart of the Reds' defence, which proved crucial to Manchester United's return to the top.

An hour-and-a-half before the 1996 FA Cup final, though, Sir Alex told Bruce that he would not be playing against Liverpool after he missed the previous three weeks with a hamstring injury.

Bruce has since confirmed that he knew there and then that 'this is it for you' at the age of 35 and the skipper went on to complete a free transfer to Birmingham City - just two years after becoming the first Englishman to captain his side to a double.

The Newcastle United head coach looks back fondly on his time with Sir Alex, and the pair have a great relationship, but in an extraordinary discussion about his own fallout with the Manchester United legend on Off the Ball, Keane referenced Bruce's exit.

"I was at the club when Bryan Robson left. I was at the club when Steve Bruce left. Two brilliant servants for Man United and I didn't like how they were treated at the end," he said.

"So people talk about Ferguson's man management. Don't be kidded on by all of it, either. Don't be kidded on by all that. Ferguson came out afterwards and said, 'I always did what was best for Manchester United'. Nonsense.

"His son, Darren, played for the club, won a league medal. Very lucky. His brother was chief scout for Man United for a long time. Listen, I'm surprised his wife wasn't involved on the staff somewhere.

"Darren, his son, was at Preston one time. Darren loses his job. A couple of young players are on loan from Man United. Guess what happens the next day? They're pulled out of Preston. Is that's what's doing the best for Man United? Do me a favour."
