Roy Keane comments show why Manchester United are considering selling Fred

In Sunday's match against Fulham, Fred perfectly encapsulated his Manchester United career.

At times the Brazilian looked to be a step behind the game causing the Reds to look weak in the centre of the pitch. But, ten minutes after the interval, he rewarded Erik ten Hag's faith.

His inch-perfect pass parted the visitors' defence with ease allowing Bruno Fernandes to chip home the winner. If United had seen more of second-half Fred this season, perhaps they would not be considering Fulham's advances.

MEN Sport understands the 30-year-old is a target for Marco Silva in the summer. The Cottagers boss has recruited a number of Portuguese-speaking players this season and Fred would undoubtedly fit into their system.

He has not been the weakest link in the United midfield but Roy Keane's comments on Fred after he scored against Reading in the FA Cup earlier this year, sum up why he is being considered for the exit. The former captain told ITV Sport: "That's probably what I think is his role is - coming off the bench."

Unfortunately for Fred, Keane is right - he is far behind the leading midfielders at the club. Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Plus, if he was to make his switch permanent, Marcel Sabitzer has also shown he can be a stronger option in the centre. At his age, Fred will not be content with being a substitute, brought on for 20 minutes here and there.

So, for United and the Brazilian, a summer exit could be the best way to move forward.
