Roy Keane asked what he would have done if offered Manchester United job

Roy Keane insists he was never in the running for the Manchester United job, with Ralf Rangnick now set to take the Old Trafford reins on an interim basis.

Speaking in the Sky Sports Super Sunday studio ahead of United's clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this afternoon, the former Red Devils skipper distanced himself from the role but also took the chance to defend his managerial record.

Keane acknowledged that his former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had run out of time before his sacking last week after a humbling 4-1 defeat to Watford.

However, with Ralf Rangnick set to take over on an interim basis until the end of the season, the Cork-man questioned the wisdom of hiring an interim boss.

He said: “First of all it was disappointing for Ole to finish on such a low. But the Watford result was poor, as was the performance.

“I’ve argued with Jamie (Carragher) over the last year or two about managers getting enough time, but I think Ole did get enough time. The results and performances over the last couple of months have been really poor, so there was no real surprise after the Watford game.

“The club now have to regroup, get somebody in, get the deal over the line. I don’t think this interim stuff is ideal, but it is what it is and they’ve got to get on with it.

“But ultimately when I look at the last few months, the performances of the players, they’re nowhere near good enough for Man United. But as we know the manager always pays the price.”

Keane was then asked, 'what if they had called you?' by Sky Sports presenter David Jones.

He responded: “They were never going to call me. That was never going to happen. I’d have no problem going into any dressing room, that wouldn’t be a problem.

“People tend to forget I have managed before and I did okay in the Premier League with Sunderland!”
