Roy Keane and Graeme Souness argue over Manchester United great's Liverpool FC claim

Manchester United legend Roy Keane and Graeme Souness have disagreed over a claim by the Liverpool legend that his old side are bordering on becoming 'great'.

Liverpool failed to win the Premier League title last season but amassed 97 points in the process, only losing out to eventual champions Manchester City by one point.

Souness feels that Liverpool have already become borderline 'great' after what happened last season but former United star Keane has disagreed with his claim.

"This team have been brilliant in Europe over the last few years and everyone’s getting carried away with them because they’ve been so brilliant," Keane told Sky Sports.

"But this would be their first league title, you’ve got to win league titles."

Souness replied by insisting that Liverpool are already close to being a great team after last season's feat of 97 points despite not winning the league.

Souness told Sky Sports: "I think they’re bordering on [being a great team] when you look at the consistency, second last year, would have won the league normally in any other year, losing the European cup final to some poor goalkeeping. They’re close to being called a great team."

But Keane chimed back in and insisted that last season's efforts don't mean a lot when it comes to whether Liverpool should be judged as a great team yet.

"You say they finished second, it doesn’t matter how many points you get if you finish second, do me a favour," Keane added. "We’re talking about the league here, we’re talking about the league.

"Europe in the last few years has been fantastic, we’re talking about leagues, winning league titles.

"You can get into the Champions League now without winning the league, so maybe it’s harder to win the league than the Champions League."
