Roy Keane addresses Micah Richards’ calls for him to become Manchester United manager

Former captain Roy Keane has responded to former Manchester City defender Micah Richards' calls for him to become Manchester United's next manager.

Often a dynamic TV duo, creating a loveable atmosphere on Sky Sports' Premier League coverage, Keane and Richards have developed a strong relationship, with Richards often making light-hearted fun of Keane's rants and seriousness.

Richards has recently been joking that Keane should have been considered by United to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, either on an interim basis or on a permanent deal.

Keane has often been critical of United in recent months, refusing to pull any punches when slamming their performances, most memorably after the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City last month.

With Keane resembling a figure that does not take any sort of nonsense and demands nothing but the very best, Richards has joked that United should have turned to his Sky Sports colleague, highlighting that his no-nonsense approach would have been ideal.

Now, in a special episode of 'Micah Richards & Roy Keane Driving Home for Christmas' on Sky Sports' YouTube channel, Richards has quizzed Keane on the United job, with the Irishman making it clear what his stance is on the United job.

Richards said: "I joked on Sky and said 'give it Roy until the end of the season'."

Keane replied: "Why would that be a joke? You said something about me falling out with players, but that is what managers do.

"I'm going to ask you a couple of questions and turn it on you; have you ever been in the dressing room with me as a player?"

Richards replied: "No."

Keane then asked: "Have you ever been in the dressing room with me as a manager?"

Richards responded: "No."

Keane continued: "Why jump to these conclusions? As a manager you are meant to challenge people. Managers do that. Obviously you can't fall out with everyone, but there is no doubt in my mind that, and I don't mean at Man United.... I have managed in the Premier League."

Whilst Keane has refused to hold back when criticising United in recent months, he has often slated David de Gea and Harry Maguire more than most.

When Richards asked him what he'd do with those two if he was to become United manager, Keane said: "The first thing that I'd do when I'd walk into the club would be to grab hold of those two and say: 'I have been really critical of the two of you, prove me wrong'.

"That is the end of the conversation.

"If they get upset, no problem. Players get upset all the time. It is not about players liking the manager. The most important thing is that you hope the players will respect the manager."

Richards then asked Keane why he would not get the United job.

Keane replied: "Well, obviously I am not going to get the United job."

Keane wrapped up the conversation by joking that the Reds "could not afford" him, sparking a trademark, much-loved laugh from Richards.
