Roy Hudd dead: Comedian and actor dies aged 83, agent confirms

Comedian and actor Roy Hudd has died at the age of 83, his agent confirmed.

During his decades-spanning career, Hudd appeared in Coronation Street, dramas Ashes to Ashes, Broadchurch and Benidorm.

His agent's statement said: “We are sad to announce the passing of the much-loved and amazingly talented Roy Hudd OBE.

“After a short illness, Roy passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Sunday the 15th of March, with his wife Debbie at his side.

“The family would ask you to respect their privacy at this very sad time.”

Hudd's TV breakthrough was in the 1964 series, Not So Much A Programme, More A Way of Life.

The satirical show also starred David Frost, John Bird and Michael Crawford.

Hudd made numerous Corrie appearances between 2002 and 2010, playing local undertaker Archie Shuttleworth.

He also enjoyed a successful radio career, hosting BBC Radio 2's The News Huddlines for 26 years.

Celebrities and fans soon began paying tribute on Twitter.

Comedy writer Simon Blackwell wrote: “Very sad indeed to hear that Roy Hudd has died.

“A really lovely bloke, a great comedian, excellent straight actor. And a comedy historian too.

“I got my start in comedy writing via his Radio 2 show The News Huddlines. He was a total joy to write for. All good wishes to his family," he concluded.

The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre paid tribute to Hudd with a message on Twitter saying: “We are all saddened to hear of the passing of #RoyHudd.

“Roy appeared on our stage several times, with his most recent role in A Woman of No Importance last October / November.

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time”.
