Roy Hodgson told key area Crystal Palace must strengthen in transfer window as Everton loom

Crystal Palace have been active in the transfer market this summer, but Roy Hodgson has been told the one key area that still needs strengthening in his squad.

Eberechi Eze and Nathan Ferguson have been signed on permanent deals since the close of the 2019/20 Premier League season, and Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi has also made a short-term move to Selhurst Park.

Palace were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league last season, notching just 31 goals across their 38 matches. And Eni Aluko says that if Palace want to continue to improve this year, they may need to bring in another striker that can guarantee them some goals.

"I think the striker position is still one that is up in the air with Palace," Aluko told football.london.

"Benteke has had a lot of time now to prove whether he can score goals for Palace and he hasn't. Batshuayi has just come on loan from Chelsea, is he going to be enough?

"I think when you look at sides like Southampton, they have a definite go-to when it comes to scoring goals. Danny Ings effectively kept them up last year.

"Palace I still don't know who's going to get them. Zaha is obviously there but he's a winger.

"Hodgson played him centrally, but there's still a question mark over whether he's going to get enough goals, so I think the striker position is one that they could deepen in terms of the choices Hodgson has."

Palace are up against Everton on Saturday afternoon following two wins from their first two matches - a record matched by their opponents from Goodison Park.

And Aluko is tipping Carlo Ancelotti and his side to make a push for a European place come the end of the season - as long as they can continue to get the best from new signing James Rodriguez and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

"Everton are probably one of the teams that have done the best business in the transfer window," she added.

"Ancelotti is finally a manager that can really build Everton and get really excited about in terms of the heights of where they can go: I wouldn't be surprised based on the start that they've had if they finished in the top six, could even push for top four with the players they've got.

"James Rodriguez has started very well, and Calvert-Lewin is clearly the striker that Ancelotti has a lot of faith in. They look good defensively as well.

"I think Everton could be the surprise package of this season. They obviously have a manager that is ready to instil that confidence for them to kick on."
