Roy Hodgson slams referee decision as Christian Benteke misses Liverpool reunion

Christian Benteke will miss a reunion with his former club Liverpool after being sent off for Crystal Palace after opening the scoring against West Ham United on Wednesday night.

The Belgium international made the move to Selhurst Park from Anfield in August 2016, completing a £27m move, and scored both goals for Palace in a 2-1 win the last time Jurgen Klopp 's men actually lost a home game in the Premier League back in April 2017.

But the 30-year-old has struggled in the capital ever since, registering just six top-flight goals between 2017/18 and 2019/20.

However, he has found form in recent weeks, scoring a brace against West Bromwich Albion earlier this month before opening the scoring against West Ham United on Wednesday night.

But he won't be given the opportunity to continue that form against the Reds on Saturday when Liverpool travel to Crystal Palace - as he must serve a one-match suspension following his dismissal against the Hammers for a second-bookable offence.

Scoring a first-half diving header, Benteke was dismissed 20 minutes from time for a second yellow card after catching Tomas Soucek with his elbow, having earlier been cautioned for a similar incident with Angelo Ogbonna.

And Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson slammed the decision to send off the striker after the final whistle.

"It was a ludicrous decision," said the former Liverpool boss. "He only tried to use his arm for leverage and honestly win the ball.

"It's odd to sit here and say these things as if you're some monster who wants everything to go his way."

Benteke scored 10 goals from 42 appearances during his one season with Liverpool after signing from Aston Villa in a £32.5m deal in July 2015.
