Roy Hodgson singles out Crystal Palace star for praise after Eagles' injury woes

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has hailed Jairo Riedewald as a "consummate professional" during his time at the club.

The Dutchman has had a run in the team in recent weeks, playing out of position at left-back with compatriot Patrick van Aanholt out injured.

The former Ajax man impressed too, with his performances earning him the Palace player of the month award for January, as voted for by the Eagles fans.

But he has been dropped to the bench for the game against Sheffield United, with van Aanholt coming in to replace him after recovering from injury - a decision that has not gone down well with some Palace fans.

Nevertheless, Hodgson has heaped praise on the 23-year-old and his efforts during his time at Palace.

Writing in his programme notes for the game against Sheffield United, Hodgson said: "I was particularly pleased to see that Jairo Riedewald earned the club's player of the month award for his displays throughout January.

"Jairo has been a consummate professional in the time that I have been with Crystal Palace and his career here has been one that requires great focus and drive.

"I am pleased to see Jairo earning his just reward."

Riedewald, who joined the Eagles in the summer of 2017 during Frank de Boer's brief spell in charge, has now played 29 times for the Eagles since his move from Holland.

Meanwhile, Hodgson has also praised the rest of Palace's squad for how they have coped with the injury crisis that has affected them in recent weeks, with as many as ten players missing at one stage.

"Had it not been for the commitment, flexibility and determination of those members of the squad who do not always feature, our season could have been jeopardised by such sustained misfortune," he said.
