Roy Hodgson: No reason Crystal Palace shouldn't dream of Europe

Roy Hodgson says there is "no reason" his Crystal Palace squad shouldn't be dreaming of a European finish, if they can all stay fit.

The Eagles are just two points of 7th place Sheffield United, and level on points with 8th place Tottenham - with Manchester City's pending European ban potentially opening up that spot for a place in the Europa League.

Hodgson's side are on their longest winning run of the season, with four victories on the bounce without conceding having picked up their season with a 2-0 win at Bournemouth.

The former England manager has been reluctant to entertain the thought of a Europa League finish to this point, choosing to remain focused on their efforts to stay in the division.

Palace had navigated a way through a depleting injury crisis over the Christmas period and will still be without Jeffrey Schlupp, James Tomkins and Martin Kelly for the foreseeable future, with Hodgson warning that more injuries could hamper their efforts to push for European football.

"There’s no reason why they shouldn’t," said Hodgson. "But I get a little bit bored repeating myself. This is a period of time where you are going to need quite a few players. You need to be able to rotate. You’re going to need to be able to deal with the injuries that are going to come up.

"Sometimes not massive injuries but injuries which keep people out of games. My only concern for the team is in certain areas of the field we don’t have the cover or the amount of players we need to push on and make that concerted effort which will be needed to reach a European place.

"Having said that I’ve seen Wolves play virtually the same XI for long, long periods of time and what’s more take on more matches than the rest have played. So we could be very lucky and if we can keep the 14 or 15 senior players we have fit then I believe we have a chance."
