Roy Hodgson makes Eberechi Eze statement amid Wilfried Zaha transfer speculation

Roy Hodgson insists that Crystal Palace are doing their utmost to keep Wilfried Zaha at Selhurst Park, and that Eberechi Eze has not been signed to replace him.

Eze joined from QPR this summer in a deal worth £16million, potentially rising to £20million.

Hodgson says that the club are still looking at bringing more players into the squad, and that Eze has been brought in to play alongside Zaha - not to replace him.

"Well, it would be good [to sign more players]," Hodgson told reporters. "I think we still have a couple of positions.

"There are areas of course where if the right player became available, we'd like to make more signings. We're working on that. But the good thing is we have broken the back if you like, on signings that we wanted to make. We have got three players through the door.

"So now, it could be regarded as more of a bonus than an absolute necessity, because we will have a squad that we're looking to to get us through the season.

"No," Hodgson answered about Eze being a replacement for Zaha. "We've maintained all along that we have no intention to move on Wilf Zaha.

"We've had to face up to the prospect that if a club comes in and make a big din for him we might not be able to keep him: we're realistic, we're pragmatic.

"But there is no question that we are signing a player to replace him. We have signed a player to play with him."
