Roy Hodgson laments Crystal Palace performance despite Brighton's controversial penalty decision

Roy Hodgson says there is nothing positive he can take from Crystal Palace’s 3-1 defeat at rivals Brighton.

The hosts took the lead after 24 minutes after James McArthur was adjudged to have foul Colombian Jose Izquierdo, though replays showed the Scotsman took the ball before any contact was made.

Brighton, though, had a far more convincing case for a penalty moments later when Glenn Murray went down under the challenge of James Tomkins but Kevin Friend waved away protests.

Seagulls defender Shane Duffy was shown a red card while Murray was down receiving treatment and, in the aftermath, Palace struggled to regain focus.

Substitute Leon Balogun doubled the lead as play was restarted from a corner, with no yellow shirt picking up the defender.

The third and fatal goal was even worse; Tomkins at fault as Florin Andone was allowed to almost run the length of the pitch and finish to seal the win.

“There is no point allowing that [the penalty] to disturb the way you want to play irrespective of whether you think it was correctly given or not.

“Who knows, he did [give it] and we had to adjust to it and we didn’t. Second and third goals are disappointing and frustrating, they are the buzzwords I keep hearing.

“It seems to be fairly obvious when you come here to win a game and lose 3-1, there are no good things I feel.

“The second goal was something we have to take total responsibility for and the third one too, that wasn’t even an attack it was just a clearance.

“There is nothing positive I can say at all.”

Hodgson must now pick his side up ahead of a visit to London rivals West Ham on Saturday who will be buoyed having recorded back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since January 2017.
