Roy Hodgson hoping Crystal Palace avoid Wilfried Zaha bids after opening day winner against Southampton

Roy Hodgson says he hopes Wilfried Zaha's bright start to the season does not result in any bids for his star man.

The Crystal Palace forward took just 13 minutes to notch his first goal of the campaign against Southampton having waited 13 games to do so last term.

Zaha is still set on leaving Selhurst Park, but Palace have no need to sell and will not accept anything below £50million.

While Hodgson knows Zaha still has his heart set on a new challenge, the 73-year-old is hoping there are no approaches between now and the end of the transfer window.

"Wilf [Zaha] showed a lot of composure to take the chance," Hodgson said after that 1-0 win over the Saints on opening day.

"He made it look easy. He thinks it would be nice if some club came in and paid the market price.

"Let’s see what transpires, for me hopefully nothing. I think he still hopes a big club comes in and takes him from us."

Palace's winning start is a significant boost for Hodgson given the Eagles ended last season with a run of eight games without a win.

It would have carried over to this season if it weren't for two fine saves from Vicente Guaita, the second coming from Danny Ings deep in injury time.

Hodgson added: "I’m indebted to Vicente Guaita for what I thought was an incredible save from Danny Ings.

"I think we showed if that meant sacrificing some of the more beautiful football, then we did it."
