Roy Hodgson gives Ebere Eze update amid fresh Crystal Palace injury blows ahead of Southampton

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Crystal Palace could be without eight players for the Premier League opener with Southampton tomorrow.

But the Eagles could involve new signings Michy Batshuayi and Ebere Eze against Ralph Hasenhuttl's Saints side.

The Eagles welcome Southampton to south London for the opening game of the 2020/21 season, with Palace looking to start the new season in better form than they finished the last, having picked up just one point in their last eight games of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, Palace have a number of injury problems going into the game, particularly in defence, with central defenders James Tomkins, Gary Cahill and Mamadou Sakho all set to miss the game, while full-backs Patrick van Aanholt and Nathan Ferguson are both still recovering from injuries.

But there is more positive news regarding Eze, who picked up a groin injury in his first game in pre-season after joining from Queens Park Rangers.

"He [Eze] came to us, trained for two or three days and went straight into a game but unfortunately picked up an injury," Hodgson said at his pre-match press conference.

"He's got a week's training behind him, but as someone playing match ability, he's behind the other players.

"He's only had 45 minutes with us. He trained with us yesterday, he's physically fit but he's not match fit."

However, strikers Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham are set to miss the game after Hodgson confirmed they had been added to the club's injury list.

"We've added one or two players to the list in Benteke and Wickham as well as the five defenders.

"Mamadou Sakho had his first training session today, he can't play as of yet but it's nice to see him back.

"I hope in the coming weeks we'll get some of the others back."
