Roy Hodgson confirms double injury blow ahead of Crystal Palace's clash with Brighton

Roy Hodgson admits that Crystal Palace will be without Patrick van Aanholt and Jeffrey Schlupp for the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night.

The Eagles welcome arch-rivals Brighton to south London on Monday night in the Premier League, with the two sides separated by just three points in the middle of the table.

But Palace have a number of injury problems ahead of the game, particularly in defence, with Hodgson set to be without any of his first choice recognised full-backs.

Martin Kelly has deputised at right-back in recent weeks, with Joel Ward out injured, while left-back Patrick van Aanholt went off injured against Bournemouth last week.

Jeffrey Schlupp replaced him, but he too went off injured on Saturday at Watford, to be replaced by Jairo Riedewald.

And Hodgson has confirmed that Schlupp, van Aanholt and Ward will miss the game on Monday night.

"[Patrick] Van Aanholt and [Jeffrey] Schlupp are out. Joel Ward is not avaialble, Mamadou Sakho is suspended," he said, speaking at his pre-match press conference.

"There are one or two others who could be added to that list

"I don’t know how long Schlupp will be out but it’s going to keep him out for a period of time. We will have to wait and see. No return date for van Aanholt but he’s very keen to come back as soon as possible. We will have to wait and see how is rehabilitation progresses and we are in the hands of the medical staff."

Hodgson added that Ward is progressing well in his recovery from a knee injury, but that the former Portsmouth defender is unlikely to feature over the Christmas period.

Meanwhile, he said he was confident that the Eagles would still be able to field a good side against Brighton, despite the injury problems.

"They make it harder but we’ve been through a period where we have been very blessed," he said.

"This is a totally different situation and the injuries have hit us with a vengeance. We will have to make certain we navigate our way through this time and we still have 11 good players to put on the field."
