Roy Hodgson challenges Crystal Palace fringe players to seize chance ahead of summer overhaul

Roy Hodgson says Crystal Palace's final five games are a chance for fringe players to make their case before an overhaul of the squad at the end of the season.

The Eagles are keen to add a number of fresh faces to their squad during the small window before next season, with a striker the priority.

Comfortably safe from relegation and with their hopes of a push for Europe having narrowed, Hodgson has the chance to offer those who do not often get a shot the chance to make a statement against the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea, who they face on Tuesday night.

"It is important we get a look at some of the players who haven't played much football and we need to see more of," Hodgson said. "It was nice to give Tyrick [Mitchell] ten minutes at the end of the game, nice to give Jairo [Riedewald] nearly 60 minutes as well because we haven't seen that much of him except in that period where we had all the injuries and he was forced into a position where he wasn't used to playing. On the other hand we take these games very seriously, it is five games and 15 points."

Christian Benteke is one who will want to make a statement over the final run, with Hodgson keen to bring in some more firepower over the summer - and Hodgson is hoping he can finish on a high.

"It's good he gets some games now," said Hodgson. "Finishes the season well and hopefully come back next season stronger for the experience."
