Roy Hodgson backs Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha to start firing after slow start

Roy Hodgson has backed Wilfried Zaha to start firing on all cylinders despite failing to score or assist in five games so far this season.

The Palace talisman was denied a summer move away from south London after handing in a transfer request, while he also returned to the club late having taken part in the Africa Cup of Nations. A chaotic summer has certainly taken it's toll early on this term.

Palace have been goal shy so far, with Jordan Ayew and Patrick van Aanholt their only goalscorers in five Premier League games and one Carabao Cup tie this season.

A focused, fit and firing Zaha will go a long way to to sending that scoring tally north.

"Very few people in our teams have scored goals, we've only scored three so it is quite easy to remember who the goalscorers were," Hodgson said. "As for assists it is only three possible assists so it is probably a little unkind to start saying you are not assisting enough or scoring enough.

"I would say that we expect a lot more from Wilf in terms of assists and goals and I think that we are going to get it.

"He has been very good after he got over the initial disappointment that he didn't get his way in the transfer window, once he got over that and came to terms with the fact he has got to buckle down, for his club and his team-mates, manager, coaching staff and for himself he has been very good. I have actually been very pleased with him in the last three games but I can't deny the fact has hasn't scored or assisted yet."

Hodgson will have a near full compliment of players to pick from when his side take on Wolves this Sunday, with third choice striker the only injury doubt.

The visitors will be looking to bounce back from two defeats inside a week having been beaten at home by Chelsea last weekend and then losing 1-0 to Braga in the Europa League on Thursday night.
