Roy Carroll to Portadown? Matthew Tipton plays down speculation linking veteran keeper with move

Portadown boss Matthew Tipton has played down speculation linking veteran goalkeeper Roy Carroll with a move to Shamrock Park.

It was reported on Friday that the former Northern Ireland shot-stopper could be heading to the Championship club.

Carroll was released by Linfield at the end of last season, and is currently recovering from a cruciate ligament injury that he sustained at the start of the year .

The 41-year-old has said he wants to continue playing, but is unlikely to return to action until November.

"I don't know where this story has come from," Tipton said.

"It is that time of year when speculation is rife, and obviously someone has put two and two together and got five.

"It is no secret that we are looking for a goalkeeper. I have put that on record and it is something we are actively pursuing.

"Roy is obviously a free agent now and he wants to continue playing, so there will always be speculation.

"He is a very experienced goalkeeper who I am sure many Premiership clubs would be interested in. But any link to Portadown is purely speculation."

Portadown had Declan Dunne on loan from Cliftonville last season, but the young keeper has since returned to Solitude.

"A goalkeeper is one of the positions we want to fill during the summer and we are working hard on that," Tipton added.

"I am pleased with the business we have done already this season. We had six targets and we have managed to get five of them so far."
